Arivaca Stone Soup

There's an old folktale that's been told around the world for centuries. It goes something like this:

A traveler arrives in a small village. Times are hard. Resources are scarce. People are keeping to themselves, guarding what little they have. Trust is low. Connection is fading.

The traveler sets a large pot over a fire in the middle of the village square, fills it with water, and drops in a single stone. Just a stone.

A curious villager wanders over. "What are you making?"

"Stone soup," the traveler says with a smile. "It's going to be delicious. But you know what would make it even better? A carrot."

The villager thinks about it. A carrot? That's not much. So they bring one.

Another neighbor notices the activity and strolls over. "Stone soup, huh?"

"It's coming along beautifully," says the traveler. "But a few potatoes would really bring it together."

The neighbor shrugs. A few potatoes? Sure. Why not.

One by one, villagers contribute. Some herbs. A handful of beans. A little bit of meat. Someone drags over a chair. Someone else brings bowls. Before long, the entire village is gathered around this pot — laughing, talking, sharing — and the soup? It's incredible. Rich, nourishing, and more than enough for everyone.

No single person could have made that meal alone. But everyone brought just a little — and together, they created something none of them expected.

The stone didn't make the soup. The people did. The stone just got things started.

So what does stone soup have to do with Arivaca?

Everything.

Most of you know us as Arivaca Human Resource — AHR. The folks who deliver meals, run the food pantry, help with emergencies, utilities, senior programs — you name it. If our community needs it, we try to figure it out. We've been doing that since 1988, and we're not slowing down.

But here's something a lot of people don't know.

Our full legal name is Arivaca Coordinating Council / Human Resource Group, Inc.

Read that again. Coordinating Council.

When our founders created this organization nearly four decades ago, they didn't just build a safety net. They built a framework for something much bigger. They envisioned a space where the people, organizations, and voices of Arivaca could come together — not to be managed, not to be told what to do — but to coordinate. To share ideas. To align efforts. To collaborate in ways that honor who we are as a community while making us stronger together.

That was the original vision. And it was brilliant.

Over the years, the Human Resource side — the direct services — stayed active and grew. But the Coordinating Council side? It quietly went to sleep. Life happened. Founders moved on. Priorities shifted. And for over two decades, that part of our mission sat dormant.

Until now...

We're waking it up.

Over the past few months, we've been working behind the scenes to reignite the Coordinating Council. We've gathered leaders from local organizations and passionate community members around the table for an initial meeting. It's early. We're laying the foundation carefully and intentionally. And we'll be sharing more details as things take shape.

But here's what matters most right now:

This isn't about one organization running the show. This is stone soup.

AHR is the stone in the pot. We're just getting things started. But the soup — the real nourishment, the real magic — that comes from ALL of us. Every organization. Every neighbor. Every voice that says, "I've got a carrot to throw in."

We live in a time when it feels like everything around us is trying to pull us apart. Division is loud. It's everywhere. But right here in our Village? We have a choice. We can keep to ourselves, guard what little we have, and hope for the best. Or we can gather around the pot.

We're choosing the pot, and we hope you will join us!

And we're already seeing it happen. Our 4th Friday "Arivaca Together" gatherings are a perfect example. Every month, we come together to visit, share food, and swap stories. This month (February 27th), we're making adobe bricks for Plaza de la Amistad — our friendship plaza — right in the heart of downtown. Those bricks will become retaining walls and an amphitheater. A shared space, built by shared hands. And we'll be enjoying pizza at A Gathering Space while we do it.

That's stone soup. Right there. In real life. In Arivaca.

The Coordinating Council is simply the next chapter of that same spirit — formalized, intentional, and rooted in the vision our founders had nearly 40 years ago. It's not about changing who we are. It's about remembering who we've always been. A village that shows up for each other.

We're just getting started, and there's so much more to come. If any of this stirs something in you — if you feel the pull to be part of what's next — I'd love to hear from you. Reach out to me directly at suzanne@arivacahr.com or stop by Arivaca Human Resource anytime.

The pot is on the fire. The stone is in the water. Now let's make some soup.

Upward and Onward...
